Rough Justice
04:36
|
|||
The first word of the murder came from the grocer's sister
whispered how they found them drowned just on the edge of town
Ten year old Melissa
Smothered with her brother
The townsfolk made a bloody oath
To track the killer down
Jimmy was a slow one, kind of dumb a no-one
They dragged him from his Mama's place though he screamed it wasn't him
And by the flicker of their torches
They watched him draw his last breath
As he was swinging from the branches
Some cheered and spit on him
Rough justice never gives us back what we have lost
It simply strips us of the future and pushes up the cost
Rough justice is a weapon ought never to be used
Rough justice needs a victim and the victim could be you
Six months later there are two more children killed
In the same way near Northam and the town it feels a chill
For they know now Jimmy never
Murdered those poor kids
And there's many an unquiet heart
For the awful thing they did
Rough justice never gives us back what we have lost
It simply strips us of the future and pushes up the cost
Rough justice is a weapon ought never to be used
Rough justice needs a victim and the victim could be you
Now a vagrant up in Derby boasts he did the deeds
Or so claims the cell-mate whom they promise will go free
So they hang the crazy fella
And calm it does descend
Til six months later Albany
There's two more dead again
Rough justice never gives us back what we have lost
It simply strips us of the future and pushes up the cost
Rough justice is a weapon ought never to be used
Rough justice needs a victim and the victim could be you

Stella
04:05
|
|||
Stella was a good girl she made a few mistakes
The biggest one of these was Joe
Joe he was a boozer a brawler and a loser
But he was Stella's Romeo
Stella worked the diner to save a home deposit
While Joe was in the barroom playing pool
Stella stashed her savings back of the closet
She was planning even then for kids and school
Love isn't always a good thing
Love can lead you astray
There'll be times when you wish to God
Love never came your way
Joe found Stella's money and he blew it down the track
Stella couldn't see through all her tears
But she believed Joe when he said he'd make the money back
And she kept believing every single year
Love isn't always a good thing
Love can lead you astray
There'll be times when you wish to God
Love never came your way
One day a policeman came to Stella’s trailer
Joe was wanted for burglary
But Stella knew Joe he wasn't like that
She wouldn't them take her man away
And so she picked up Joey's hunting gun
And shot the policeman dead before she realised what she done
Stella went to prison washin' dishes
With vicious girls on either side
But she never blamed her Joseph she never had a cruel word
Until last week she never ever cried
They found her hanging above a story of how a million dollars had been won
By Stella's fella Joe and there he was with his good-looking new girl on page one
Love isn't always a good thing
Love can lead you astray
There'll be times when you wish to God
Love never came your way.

Shooting Star
02:38
|
|||
You told me that my dreams
Were far too grand for my poor means
You told me starry nights were not for you
You told me there's no pot of gold
I just stopped by so you'd be told
I'm no shooting star I'm shooting through
I got a ticket for the noonday train
So you don't have to worry hearing 'bout my dreams again
And if I make it rich I'll send a post-card just for you
Marked "I'm no shooting star I'm shooting through"
I'm no shooting star I'm shooting through
I wouldn't want to bore you with the things I aim to do
So stay right here and find that guy
Who never looks up to the sky
You told me that the time you spent
With me was just a waste
You said I was a man just born to lose
You said a shooting star was simply
Not what you required
But I'm no shooting star I'm shooting through
I got a ticket for the noonday train
So you don't have to worry hearing ‘bout my dreams again
And if I make it rich I'll send a post-card just for you
marked "I'm no shooting star I'm shooting through"
I’m no shooting star I just shot through.

My Grecian Odyssey
03:52
|
|||
I kissed first in Athens smelled ouzo on her breath
She left me in ruins in Delos so bereft
It was a famous summer thinking I had romance beat
But our lover affair was short as it was sweet.
And I know that I loved you so much more than you loved me
And that’s the most important fact I learned on my Grecian odyssey.
We hooked up on a ferry sailed Rhodes across to Crete
All curls n sunglasses red sandals on her feet
Pledged my heart on Santorini by the Dancing Donkey’s door
Course every sign she might be danger I ignored
And I know that I loved you so much more than you loved me
And that’s the most important fact I learned on my Grecian odyssey.
I caught a glimpse of you in London on a quiet Mayfair street
But I couldn’t move towards you nor retreat
I was frozen by the memory of that summer in the sun
So I savoured every second till you’d gone
And I know that I loved you so much more than you loved me
I don’t blame you that’s a fact you can’t change history
And I will love you a thousand years from now
Or back in deep antiquity
And that’s the most important fact I learned on my Grecian odyssey.

We're rude crude home-brewed roll spit tobacco and chew boys
Just bad, mad lads in a bar with a jar and a pool cue
Low dollar blue collar laugh dance holler and handsome
Be your friend amen to the end extend it and then some
We're riggers and diggers and wheelers and dealers we're good guys
Love our hogs and our dogs and our cars and the stars in the night sky
And you know that you count on us
When the chips are down we make the downs go up
We're rude crewed home-brewed roll spit tobacco and chew boys.
We're the feet on the beat of a street near you,
The hands of the man who shapes and screws
Drives the van of the band to Kalamazoo
Five-star four-star three-star too
And if you ever need a helping hand
Or a little bit of understand
You'll find it in the space on the bar beside the jar between those
Rude crude home-brewed roll spit tobacco and chew boys.
We're rude crude, home-brewed, roll spit tobacco and chew boys
Just bad mad lads in a bar with a jar and a pool cue
Low dollar, blue collar, laugh dance holler and handsome
Be your friend amen to the end extend it and then some
And rest assured that we will be deployed
In every bar from Wichita to Illinois
We're rude crewed, home brewed, roll spit tobacco and chew boys
Just rude crewed home-brewed roll spit tobacco and chew boys.

Beer
03:31
|
|||
I have travelled all around this dusty dirty land
I have played in pits where fleas would not deign to land
I have backed the striptease belles with an out of tune rock band
There's only one thing keeps me goin’ one thing I understand
And it's beer beer beer, beer most every night
Not a crisp well-rounded red and not a fruity white
But a tankard of the frothy brew that's a workin man's delight
Beer beer beer beer beer
Well southern boys drink bourbon and Ivan mashed-potate
I've tried em I've imbibed 'em but I hate to deviate
From the straight and narrow path implied by those words I long to hear
Beer beer beer beer and beer and beer
And it's beer beer beer, beer most every night
Not a crisp well-rounded red and not a fruity white
But a tankard of the frothy brew that's a workin man's delight
Beer beer beer beer and beer
Well learned European drinkers swear by almanac
The Danes aka-vit the Arabs sweet arak
In Iraq if you drink at all it's the automatic sack
But there's more than one has risked the gun to crack a cold six-pack
And it's beer beer beer, beer most every night
Not a crisp well-rounded red and not a fruity white
But a tankard of the frothy brew that's a workin man's delight
Beer beer beer beer beer.

Look My Way
02:21
|
|||
If there’s a place in your heart when the honky tonkin starts
Look my way and I’ll be there to dance
If there’s a chance you and me can be the way we used to be
Just look my way before the honky tonkin starts
And we’ll dance our differences away
So when you’re in my arms you will hear me say
That I love you with all my heart
Just look my way before the honky tonkin starts
If there’s a place in your street where the two of us can meet
Whisper it to me when we are cheek to cheek
And if perchance you should glance my way before the dance
I’ll be there before the honky tonkin beat
And we’ll dance our differences away
So when you’re in my arms you will hear me say
That I love you with all my heart
Just look my way before the honky tonkin starts

Head Over Heels
03:07
|
|||
Ever since we started datin’
I admit I've hesitated
You've been very patient with this patient
But there's a problem as you've guessed
So sit right back as I confess
Then decide how you'll apply the press
I'm head over heels but I'm scared
I won't heal where I've bled
I've been hurt a lot of times
When my heart's been on the line
And I know I shouldn't think of that with you
But I get a twinge each time you're near
It's nine parts love but one part fear
So now you've heard how will you treat me dear?
I'm head over heels but I'm scared
I won't heal where I've bled
Help me nurse
Help me sister
Apply the ointment to my blister
Apply the balm with your loving palms
I'm head over heels
And I feel you can heal where I've bled
Any time we're not together
I can't look at any other
And you have said you feel the same way too
But I'm haunted by the past
I want to lose that fear but fast
So can you show me the best place to start
I'm head over heels but I'm scared
I won't heal where I've bled
Help me nurse
Help me sister
Apply the ointment to my blister
Apply the balm with your loving palms
I'm head over heels
And I feel you can heal where I've bled
I think that kiss just hit the spot
Give this guy another shot
I'm feeling good and so relaxed
So give me more I'll pay you back
It's strange to think that Iwas scared of that
I'm head over heels
And I've healed where I said I had bled.

What Happens Next
03:54
|
|||
Now that we've made it to the marina
Now that we've a house a car a lawn and a budding ballerina
I have one question that leaves me totally vexed
Now that we've made it -what happens next?
Now that you're on a comparable wage
Now that we've both grown wise learned and sage
Now that we've seen The Phantom and Cats
Oh baby what happens next?
What happens next what happens next
What happened then was simple
What's happening now is criminal
You are my witch and I'm totally hexed
So tell me baby what happens next
We stare at our lawn we play the CD
We have the same friends the same nights for tea
We try everything to preserves our youth
But baby where is the truth?
The truth is we know life's passed us by
We're too old to laugh and too young to die
We owned the handbook but misread the text
Oh baby what happens next.

Milk And Honey
04:17
|
|||
Life’s a puzzle you won’t solve
Life’s a woman you won’t involve
Life’s a master that treats you cruel
Until you learn this simple rule
A man’s a fool who looks to money
To lead him to true milk and honey
He’ll spend his life to save his money
To learn he can’t buy milk and honey
I worked real hard I sold my youth
To earn the bucks yet spurn the truth
Thought paradise would come to me
But all I gained was misery
A man’s a fool who looks to money
To lead him to true milk and honey
He’ll spend his life to save his money
To learn he can’t buy that milk and honey
So life’s a bitch and life’s a beast
Yet life’s a wedding and life’s a feast
Life’s a puzzle so hard to piece
Life’s a locked door but here’s the key
A man’s a fool who looks to money
To lead him to true milk and honey
Only a woman can take him there
But such a woman is oh so rare
You’ll only find her if you have money
Power or milk and honey.

Crazy Little Annie
02:31
|
|||
Hey everybody come out to play
It's crazy little Annie from down the way
Hey everybody let's have some fun
Crazy little Annie done got herself a gun
Come on Damon come on Lisa
Remember you compared my face to a pizza
At the time I didn't see the humour
Got me me sorer than a honeymooner
Now all that stuff is all forgiven
Mr Automatic's gonna take you straight to heaven
Sticks and stones may break your bones
But you'll have fun dancing with my gun
With my gun
Heh everybody why you cryin?
There's nothin very scary ‘bout dyin
I did it every day for all those years
That crazy little Annie stuff ringing in my ears
Now all that stuff is all forgiven
Mr Automatic's gonna take you straight to heaven
Sticks and stones may break your bones
But you'll have fun dancing with my gun
With my gun
Come on guys get off the floor
Ready or not on the count of four
You got no reason to be afraid
It's just crazy little Annie come out to play
Just crazy little Annie on judgement day.

Was It Any Better Then
03:28
|
|||
Sifting through my old record collection
A pain shot through me as I thought of the days of my youth
And sought the answer to this question
With absolute truth:
Was it any better then?
Was it any better then? Girls were girls and men were men
A wild night was a beer with friends
But was it any better then?
Was it really all that good?
One TV in the neighbourhood
Mumma yellin `will ya chop the wood’?
Was it really all that good?
Was it really such a buzz?
Dancin to the Stones tauntin the fuzz
Brown eyed beauties was it such a buzz?
You bet your rockin oath it was
It was better at a drive-in movie better than a video
It was `fab’ just being ‘groovy’
With your headband and the Dead band on the one band of your radio
Was it really better then? Levi lovers in a panel van
Hendrix Zappa Janis Joplin - Christ it was exciting then
Was it really such a buzz? Doin things just because
No aids or herpes was that such a buzz?
You bet your rockin oath it was
It was better at a drive-in movie better than a video
It was `fab’ just being ‘groovy’
With your headband and the Dead band on the one band of your radio
Turn up the music radio turn down the lights turn back the clock
We would be Romeos hanging from the window of the one EJ
Everything tomorrow nothing ever yesterday
And no we can't go back, ‘cept through the grooves of the record track
We’ve got to bury yesterday; so when our children ask we say:
Yes it was better then
Girls were girls and men were men
We did things just because
Was it better?
You bet your rockin oath it was.

Dirty windscreens heartache and beer
I’m asked is it too much to adhere
To the rules of fools as stubborn as mules
Who ask me what I’m doing here
Dirty windscreens heartache and beer
I once led a fortunate life
With a house a dog and a wife
But the plans of that man are long buried in sands
I make do with this new paradise
My own Belvedere, no Paul Revere just
Dirty windscreens heartache and beer
And yes I know I must be a disappointment to you
But I still pray on my driver-side pew
As the towns fade oh so quickly from view
One day you’ll be here
But when I wake up there’s just more
Dirty windscreens heartache and beer
I once led a fortunate life
With a house a dog and a wife
But the plans of that man are long buried in sands
I make do with this new paradise
My own Belvedere, no Paul Revere
A puppet with no puppeteer
Just more and more and more
Dirty windscreens heartache and beer
